🚦 Mentor Reports Traffic Improvements at Busy Intersection

City officials say recent traffic signal adjustments are already improving flow along one of Mentor’s busiest corridors.

During council discussion, administrators updated members on the Chillicothe Road and Mentor Avenue area, where congestion has long frustrated drivers.

Officials said the city has reviewed traffic patterns for several weeks and changed signal timing from Center Street to the Painesville Township line. The updated coordination is designed to improve movement and reduce backups, especially for northbound traffic on Chillicothe Road.

According to staff, the revised timing has increased green-light capacity and reduced the number of vehicles unable to clear intersections during each cycle.

Council members also raised concerns about drivers blocking entrances near businesses, causing delays for turning traffic. Officials said added signage, including possible “Do Not Block Drive” notices, may be considered.

The city plans to keep monitoring conditions and make further adjustments as needed.

For many residents, the intersection remains a daily source of frustration during peak travel times. Officials said early results are encouraging, but traffic management is an ongoing process that may require more refinements.

Drivers are encouraged to remain patient as the city evaluates the corridor and fine-tunes signal operations.

📰 Student With Firearm Taken Into Custody After Riverside Campus Lockdown

A lockdown was initiated Friday afternoon at Riverside Campus after school officials learned that a student had posted a threatening image on social media while inside the building.

According to Riverside Local School District, administrators were alerted around 1:55 p.m. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to the campus.

Authorities located the student in a classroom and conducted a search. Deputies discovered the student was carrying a firearm and took the individual into custody.

The lockdown was lifted at approximately 2:17 p.m. No injuries were reported.

District officials said the sheriff’s office and school administration will continue investigating the incident. Increased deputy presence is expected at Riverside Campus for the foreseeable future as a precaution.

School leaders also credited students who reported the concerning behavior, emphasizing the importance of speaking up when suspicious activity is observed.

The district said student safety remains its highest priority and reminded families to discuss appropriate behavior and reporting concerns with their children.

🚨 Five Charged in SNAP Skimming Scheme Linked to Mentor Site

Mentor Location Named in Federal SNAP/EBT Fraud Case

A Mentor business was identified as one of several Ohio sites tied to an alleged SNAP/EBT skimming scheme that targeted food assistance benefits.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, five men were charged in a conspiracy that allegedly stole or attempted to steal more than $961,000 in benefits in Ohio and California.

Investigators said skimming devices were placed on payment terminals at several locations, including a UPS Store in Mentor, along with sites in Toledo, Maple Heights, Cleveland and California.

Authorities allege the devices captured card data from EBT users, allowing suspects to drain accounts and transfer funds onto blank cards.

All five defendants are citizens of Romania and face multiple federal fraud and identity theft charges. One suspect remains at large.

🏘️ Mortgage Rates Slightly Lower to End Last Week, Modest Relief

Mortgage rates posted a slight decline from the previous week, giving homebuyers and homeowners a modest opportunity as borrowing costs remain elevated overall.

The latest Freddie Mac survey placed the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate at 6.23%, down from the week before. Current lender averages for a conventional 30-year fixed loan were around 6.329% as of April 25, while a 15-year fixed mortgage averaged 5.684%.

Although rates remain above recent lows, the week-over-week dip signals some easing in the market. Falling Treasury yields and lower oil prices helped support the move lower, though inflation concerns and ongoing market volatility continue to keep rates from falling more sharply.

Adjustable-rate products also remained below many fixed-rate options, with the average 5/1 ARM at 5.561%.

Housing analysts say rates are likely to remain in the low-to-mid 6% range in the near term unless there is clearer progress on inflation or stronger signals from the Federal Reserve.

For buyers, even small declines in rates can improve affordability and purchasing power. For current homeowners, the modest pullback may create refinancing or home equity opportunities depending on their existing loan terms.

🏀 Cavaliers Let Late Lead Slip Away as Raptors Even Series at 2-2

The Cleveland Cavaliers missed a chance to take control of their first-round playoff series Sunday, falling 93-89 to the Toronto Raptors as the matchup was evened at two games apiece.

Donovan Mitchell scored 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, while James Harden added 19. But Cleveland’s 18 turnovers and cold shooting proved costly in the closing minutes.

The Cavaliers were outscored 10-2 over the final 1:54 and could not answer after Toronto took the lead on Scottie Barnes free throws with 34 seconds remaining.

Mitchell had two late opportunities to tie the game but missed both, including a three-point attempt in the final seconds. He finished 6-for-24 from the field.

Jarrett Allen grabbed 15 rebounds and Sam Merrill added 14 points for Cleveland, which shot 10-for-40 from three-point range.

Toronto was led by Barnes and Brandon Ingram, who scored 23 points each. RJ Barrett added 18 for the Raptors, who overcame a poor 4-for-30 night from beyond the arc. The best-of-seven series now shifts back to Cleveland for Game 5 on Wednesday.

⚾ Cleveland Drops Series in Toronto After Sánchez Homer

The Cleveland Guardians could not hold onto a fifth-inning rally Sunday, falling 4-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays and dropping the three-game series.

Cleveland wiped out an early two-run deficit in the fifth when Brayan Rocchio and Angel Martínez each drove in runs to tie it at 2-2. Martínez added two hits to lead the Guardians offense.

Toronto responded in the sixth. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled to open the inning, and Jesús Sánchez followed with a two-run homer to right field for the decisive runs.

Guardians starter Slade Cecconi dropped to 0-4 after allowing four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Toronto scored early on Guerrero’s RBI single in the first, while Sánchez also added a sacrifice fly.

Cleveland had late chances but was shut down by Toronto’s bullpen over the final four innings. The Guardians now move on to face the Tampa Bay Rays, with left-hander Parker Messick scheduled to start Monday.

GlenOak, winners of three straight, improved to 11-5 with another decisive win. The Golden Eagles have now earned six victories by six runs or more.

Lucien Lessard set the tone on the mound, tossing two hitless innings without allowing an earned run.
