📰 City Council Announces Immediate Removal Effort in Wake of Video
A Mentor Board of Building and Zoning Appeals member is set to be removed after a video circulated on social media showed her using a racial slur during a confrontation with a resident.
City officials confirmed the individual in the video is Kathy Miller, a volunteer serving on the board. In response, Mentor City Council announced it will act on her swift removal, making the city’s position clear following the incident.
The cellphone video, shared widely online, shows Miller pulling driveway marker stakes from a residential yard while arguing with the person recording. During the exchange, she uses a racial slur before walking toward a nearby home. As the individual filming says police will be contacted, Miller returns and demands the video be deleted before the clip ends.
In a statement, the city condemned the behavior, emphasizing that board members are volunteers who do not represent the city’s views. Officials said the conduct does not reflect the community’s values and described it as indefensible under any circumstances.
No additional details about the incident or possible police involvement have been released.

🚧 Short-Term Delays Expected as Mentor Wraps Up Key Intersection Repairs
Drivers traveling through one of Mentor’s busiest intersections will soon encounter brief construction as the city completes a final piece of a larger road project. The work at Lakeshore Boulevard and State Route 306 focuses on concrete pavement repairs, marking the last phase of a resurfacing effort completed last year.
Rather than a full overhaul, this stage targets specific problem areas within the intersection. Crews will repair sections of concrete that have experienced the most wear, especially at joints and high-stress points caused by heavy traffic. The work aims to improve durability and create smoother transitions between lanes.
Motorists should expect temporary disruptions during construction. While no detailed schedule has been released, similar projects typically involve short-term lane restrictions, intermittent closures, and minor daytime delays. The work is expected to be completed relatively quickly compared to larger resurfacing efforts.
🚧 Intersection Upgrade Prompts Extended Closure Near Mentor City Line
A section of Mill Morr Road in Painesville Township will close May 11 as crews begin a project to reshape a nearby intersection. The closure, just east of the Mentor city line, is expected to last about 45 days, weather permitting.
The work focuses on realigning Mill Morr Road at Jackson Street. Rather than routine repairs, the project will reconstruct the roadway to better match the intersection. By adjusting the angle, lane positioning, and approach, the redesign is intended to improve safety and traffic flow.
During construction, traffic will be detoured via Jackson Street, Hopkins Road in Mentor, and U.S. Route 20. Access to homes south of the closure will remain available from Route 20.
Officials say the changes will reduce confusion and eliminate awkward turning movements. The project is being completed by Phillips Paving under the supervision of the Lake County Engineer’s Office, with the road reopening once work is finished.

💧 Basement Warning Signs Mentor Homeowners Miss
May is one of the most important months for basement inspections in Northeast Ohio. Snowmelt is gone, spring rains arrive, and hidden moisture problems often begin to show themselves. Many homeowners miss the early warning signs because they are subtle.
Start with the smell. A musty or stale odor often appears before visible water does. That smell can signal excess humidity, minor seepage, damp materials, or poor air movement.
Look at foundation walls and floors for white powdery residue. This is called efflorescence and often means water has passed through masonry and left mineral deposits behind.
Check corners, storage boxes, and items resting directly on the floor. Cardboard softening, rust on metal shelving, or damp fabric may reveal moisture before puddles ever appear.
Next, step outside. Make sure soil slopes away from the house. Over time, mulch beds, landscaping, or settling soil can create drainage paths that send water toward the foundation.
Inspect gutters during rain if possible. Overflowing gutters or downspouts that dump water near the house are a common source of basement trouble.
Also evaluate your dehumidifier. If it is undersized, old, or set too high, it may not keep up during damp spring weather.
What to do now:
Run a dehumidifier below 50% humidity
Extend downspouts away from home
Move stored boxes off floor
Check sump pump operation
Regrade soil if needed
Inspect after the next rainstorm
Small moisture issues can become mold, damaged flooring, peeling paint, or expensive waterproofing projects later. For Mentor homeowners, May is the perfect time to catch problems while they are still manageable.

⚾ Guardians Fade After Fast Start in Loss to Royals
The Cleveland Guardians dropped another game Monday night, falling 6-2 to the Kansas City Royals as early momentum slipped away and offensive struggles persisted.
Cleveland struck first in the second inning when David Fry connected for a two-run home run, briefly giving the Guardians control. But that advantage quickly vanished in the fourth, when Kansas City erupted for four runs. Bobby Witt Jr. opened the inning with a home run, and a defensive miscue allowed the Royals to tie the game before Nick Loftin’s two-run single put Cleveland behind for good.
From that point on, the Guardians were unable to generate much offense against Michael Wacha, who efficiently worked seven innings while allowing just four hits. After Fry’s homer, Cleveland managed little at the plate as Wacha settled into a rhythm and kept hitters off balance.
Kansas City added another run in the sixth on a solo homer from Jac Caglianone, further extending the gap. Cleveland’s pitching also faltered, with Tanner Bibee surrendering four runs over four innings in another tough outing during a stretch of limited run support.
The loss continues a difficult trend for the Guardians, while the Royals extended their recent surge.

🥎 Lady Cardinals Overpower Lorain Early in 14-4 Softball Victory
Lorain’s varsity softball team fell to Mentor in a non-conference matchup Monday, dropping a 14-4 decision at home. Mentor seized control early, plating three runs in the opening inning before erupting for nine more in the second to build a commanding lead Lorain could not overcome.
Defensive struggles proved costly for Lorain, which committed six errors that contributed to five unearned runs for Mentor. In the circle, Mentor’s Allie Dugach delivered a steady performance, limiting Lorain’s offensive chances throughout the game.
At the plate, Mentor’s lineup stayed productive from start to finish, with multiple players recording multi-hit games. Kathryn Bouffard led the charge, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs batted in.
With the win, Mentor improved to 13-7 overall and remained unbeaten in conference play at 6-0. The team is set to return to action Wednesday at home against Shaker Heights in a conference matchup.
⚾ Lake Catholic Powers Past Geneva, Adds 10-3 Win Over VASJ
Lake Catholic earned a 7-1 home victory over Geneva on Saturday, using a pivotal third inning to take control. Geneva opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first, but the Cougars answered with six runs in the third to seize momentum.
The offense produced nine hits, with Brayden Mann going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Micah Nyetrae added a strong performance, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, and an RBI.
Quinn Stayer led the way on the mound, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits and one unearned run. He struck out eight and walked one, keeping Geneva quiet after the first inning.
Lake Catholic stayed hot in its next game, defeating Villa Angela–St. Joseph 10-3. The Cougars scored in bursts, plating three runs in both the first and third innings before adding four more in the fifth, finishing with 11 hits.
The Cougars now sit at 10-8 and will host Mayfield in a 5 p.m. matchup today.
