📰 FirstEnergy Preparing Grid Improvements in Mentor

MENTOR, Ohio — After years of resident complaints about power outages and aging electrical infrastructure, Mentor officials say long-awaited grid improvements may finally be on the way.
During Tuesday night’s Mentor City Council meeting, council members announced that FirstEnergy plans to begin upgrading portions of the city’s electrical grid, with a focus on neighborhoods that have experienced recurring reliability issues during storms and peak summer demand.
Council members noted they have spent more than a decade pushing for improvements, especially in areas where residents frequently lose power during severe weather events.
While a complete list of affected neighborhoods was not released publicly during the meeting, officials said details about the targeted streets and areas are expected to be shared with council members soon. The upgrades are expected to focus first on some of the city’s most outage-prone sections.
The announcement comes as many residents prepare for the summer storm season, which often brings downed lines, overloaded equipment, and extended outages across Northeast Ohio.
Council members reacted positively to the news, calling the project “big news” for Mentor homeowners and neighborhoods that have dealt with repeated interruptions over the years. One council member joked it would be nice if the upgrades arrive before the city’s “annual August storm.”
No timeline for construction or completion was announced Tuesday night, but officials indicated additional information should become available in the coming weeks.
📰 Mentor Showcases Ties to America’s Founding
MENTOR, Ohio — As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the City of Mentor is highlighting its Revolutionary War connections through local history events.
Historian and collector Todd Brighton recently presented Revolutionary War artifacts during a public lecture in Mentor, giving residents a glimpse into the lives of everyday soldiers who fought for independence.
Brighton’s passion for history began in childhood while visiting Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, where his father worked as Henry Ford’s cabinetmaker.
The presentation focused on the sacrifices made by ordinary troops who endured harsh conditions, poor food and little pay during the war. Brighton also displayed period items used by soldiers in the field.
The event carried a personal connection for Brighton, who discovered through family research that his fourth great-grandfather, Garrit Brass, is buried in Mentor Municipal Cemetery. The cemetery is the final resting place for seven Revolutionary War veterans.
The city organized the program as part of its America 250 commemorations, giving residents a chance to explore Mentor’s ties to the nation’s founding.

⛸️ Mentor Moves Forward With Ice Arena Upgrade Project
MENTOR, Ohio — The City of Mentor is moving forward with a major upgrade at the Mentor Ice Arena aimed at preserving one of the community’s busiest recreation facilities.
Officials have opened bidding for the “East Rink Floor & Chiller Replacement” project, which focuses on replacing the refrigeration system that keeps the rink frozen.
The arena hosts youth hockey, adult leagues, figure skating, public skating, tournaments, lessons, and community events year-round, making the project important for many local programs.
The aging chiller system has experienced increasing wear and maintenance demands, and replacing it is considered essential to maintaining reliable ice conditions. A major system failure could disrupt seasons of programming and events.
City bid documents include insurance, bonding, and performance requirements designed to protect taxpayers during the project.
Officials are expected to review bids after the June 8 deadline before determining the next steps. For residents, the project represents an investment in a longtime community asset that has served local families and athletes for generations.

⚾ Manzardo’s Late Homer Lifts Guardians Past Phillies in 1-0 Pitching Classic
Kyle Manzardo delivered the game’s only run Friday night, crushing a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth inning to give the Cleveland Guardians a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
The matchup featured dominant outings from Cleveland’s Gavin Williams and Philadelphia’s Cristopher Sánchez, who each threw eight scoreless innings in a fast-moving pitchers’ duel played before more than 38,000 fans on a rainy night.
Manzardo’s opposite-field homer came off Phillies closer Jhoan Duran and proved to be the difference. Cleveland closer Cade Smith followed with a scoreless ninth inning to record his 19th save.
Williams was exceptional, striking out 11 batters without a walk while overpowering Philadelphia’s lineup throughout the night. The win improved the right-hander to 7-3 on the season.
Sánchez matched him nearly pitch for pitch, allowing four hits and striking out six over eight innings. The Phillies left-hander lowered his ERA to 1.62 and extended his scoreless streak to 37 2/3 innings, the second-longest stretch in franchise history behind Grover Cleveland Alexander.
Philadelphia also escaped a brief injury scare when third baseman Alec Bohm collided with catcher J.T. Realmuto while chasing a foul popup, though both remained in the game.
The series continues Saturday with Cleveland expected to start Slade Cecconi against Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, weather permitting.

The Lake Catholic Cougars powered past the Trinity Trojans of Garfield Heights 13-0 Thursday in tournament action at home.
Lake Catholic took control early with an explosive 11-run first inning. Trinity struggled throughout the game, issuing nine walks while managing just one hit offensively.
Brayden Mann led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Carter Jacobs finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Micah Nyetrae added two RBIs.
On the mound, Nate Luzier earned the win after allowing one hit and striking out eight over three innings. Jacob Pietravoia pitched the final two innings and struck out six.
Lake Catholic will face Perry in a playoff matchup Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Pirates enter with a 22-6 record.
🥎 Mentor’s Home Win Streak Ends in Loss to South Range
South Range continued its strong road play Friday, defeating Mentor’s Lady Cardinals softball team 8-1 to earn its ninth straight road victory and improve to 21-7 on the season.
The Raiders controlled the game throughout, adding another lopsided win to a season that has already featured 14 victories by five runs or more.
Mentor entered the matchup riding an eight-game home winning streak, but the loss dropped the Cardinals to 19-9 and marked their largest defeat since April 8.
Despite the setback, Mentor had contributions from several players offensively. Aubree Colon highlighted the effort by going 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Both teams now turn their attention to postseason play. Mentor is scheduled to face Jackson on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Polar Bears enter the matchup averaging nearly 10 runs per game this season.
