📰 Council Approves Natural Resources Leadership Role

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor is strengthening its environmental and park management efforts with the creation of a full-time Natural Resources Supervisor position.

City Council approved the measure during its June 2 meeting as part of an ordinance updating several city staffing classifications. Officials said funding for the position has been included in the city's budget for the past two years but had never been formally added to the city's codified pay ordinance.

During council discussion, administrators explained that natural resources responsibilities have traditionally been handled by part-time and temporary employees. The new role is intended to provide consistent oversight and long-term leadership for Mentor's environmental initiatives and natural areas.

Council members asked whether the position represented a new hire or an expansion of existing staffing. City officials indicated that the full-time role would elevate duties that have historically been managed on a part-time basis.

The change comes as many communities place greater emphasis on preserving green spaces, managing natural habitats, and maintaining outdoor recreational assets.

For Mentor residents, the move reflects an ongoing commitment to caring for the city's parks and natural resources while establishing dedicated leadership for future conservation efforts.

📰 Mentor Police Recognize Three Promotions

Mentor Police Department

MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Police Department recently recognized three officers for advancing into new leadership roles during a swearing-in ceremony attended by family members, friends, and colleagues.

Lieutenant Rich Slovenkay was promoted to the rank of Captain, Sergeant Dennis Collins was promoted to Lieutenant, and Officer Ty Law was promoted to Sergeant. The promotions were officially administered by Acting Judge Ron Graham.

Department officials noted that each of the newly promoted officers has built a career defined by dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to serving the Mentor community. Their promotions reflect years of experience, hard work, and demonstrated leadership within the department.

As they transition into their new positions, Captain Slovenkay, Lieutenant Collins, and Sergeant Law will take on increased responsibilities in helping guide department operations and supporting the officers they lead.

The ceremony marked an important milestone not only for the individuals being honored but also for the Mentor Police Department as it continues to invest in experienced leadership dedicated to public service.

The Local Buzz extends its congratulations to all three officers and wishes them continued success as they serve the Mentor community in their new roles.

This week's Dinner Rescue features two family-friendly meals that are easy on the wallet, simple enough for busy weeknights, and packed with flavors everyone can enjoy. With a little planning and a few pantry staples, you can put together a wholesome meal without spending hours in the kitchen.

🥕 Mini Meatloaf Muffins with Honey-Glazed Carrots

Traditional meatloaf gets a fun, kid-friendly makeover in these perfectly portioned meatloaf muffins. Baking them in a muffin tin cuts down on cooking time and makes serving a breeze. They're hearty, comforting, and a great way to stretch a pound of ground beef into a satisfying family meal.

Pair them with simple honey-glazed carrots for a side dish that's naturally sweet and often a hit with even the pickiest eaters. Just cook sliced carrots until tender, then toss them with a little butter, honey, and a pinch of salt before serving. It's an easy way to add a colorful vegetable to the dinner plate.

🍗 Parmesan Ranch Chicken Tenders with Roasted Green Beans

Skip the drive-thru and bring crispy chicken tenders to the dinner table without the extra grease. These oven-baked tenders are coated in a flavorful parmesan and ranch crust that's sure to earn rave reviews from the kids while keeping things simple for parents.

For an easy side, roast fresh green beans with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast at 425°F for 15–20 minutes until they're tender with slightly crispy edges. The result is a delicious vegetable side that pairs perfectly with the savory chicken tenders.

Simple ingredients. Quick preparation. Family-approved flavor. That's what Dinner Rescue is all about. 👨‍🍳🍽️

⚾ Bibee Dominates, Smith Closes as Guardians Edge Tigers 3-2

CLEVELAND — Tanner Bibee struck out eight over seven-plus innings as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Friday night, snapping a four-game losing streak and earning Bibee his second consecutive win.

Bibee, who began the season winless through his first 13 starts, improved to 2-7 despite allowing solo home runs to James Outman and Spencer Torkelson, Detroit's only two hits of the game.

Patrick Bailey and Steven Kwan each recorded two hits and an RBI for Cleveland, while Cade Smith pitched a perfect ninth inning for his MLB-leading 22nd save.

The Guardians scored twice in the second inning on Bailey's RBI single and Brayan Rocchio's run-scoring triple. Outman responded with a solo homer in the third before Kwan drove in Angel Martínez with an RBI single in the sixth to provide the eventual winning run.

Torkelson's eighth-inning homer brought Detroit within one, but Smith closed out the victory. Tigers starter Jack Flaherty exited after three innings because of left leg discomfort. Detroit is expected to activate Tarik Skubal for Saturday's game, while Cleveland plans to start Joey Cantillo.

⚾ Captains Can't Hold Four-Run Lead Against Whitecaps

EASTLAKE, OH — The Lake County Captains squandered an early lead Friday night, falling to the West Michigan Whitecaps, 8-6, at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake.

The loss drops the Captains to 34-26, leaving them a half-game out of first place in the Midwest League East Division.

Lake County built a 6-2 lead behind a solid performance from starter Braylon Doughty, who allowed just two hits and two unearned runs over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.

The Captains' offense was powered by home runs from Bennett Thompson, Esteban González, and Aaron Walton, while Jeffrey Mercedes added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

West Michigan rallied with four runs in the seventh to take the lead before adding two more in the ninth on a two-run homer by Bryce Rainer.

Defensively, Lake County struggled, committing four errors that contributed to three unearned runs for the Whitecaps.

Reliever Izaak Martinez (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, in 2 1/3 innings. Joe Weins (4-0) earned the win for West Michigan.

The Captains will try to rebound as they continue their series against the Whitecaps this weekend in Eastlake.
