🎇 July 3 Celebration to Include Free Food, a 1776-Yard Run and a New Garfield Statue

Mentor residents can begin making plans for a special community celebration as the city prepares to kick off its America 250 festivities on July 3.

City officials recently unveiled plans for an evening filled with family activities, food, and patriotic events centered around the city's new President James A. Garfield statue.

Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with the dedication and unveiling of the statue, followed by a 1776-yard run and walk at 6:45 p.m. The first 300 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

A community picnic will also begin at 6:45 p.m. on the Civic Center campus, featuring free hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, and ice cream for attendees.

Throughout the evening, visitors will be able to watch a video documenting the creation of the Garfield statue, along with messages from prominent Ohioans sharing what America means to them. Activities for children are also planned.

The July 3 event is part of Mentor's larger America 250 celebration surrounding Independence Day.

Additional festivities are planned for July 4, including skydivers, live music from Hotel California – The Original Eagles Tribute Band, and fireworks.

More details about both days of events will be released as the celebration approaches.

We'll have a complete guide to Mentor's America 250 celebration, including schedules and what to know before you go, closer to the holiday weekend.

🛶 Kayakers Could Soon Have More Room at Mentor Lagoons Marina

One of Mentor's favorite spots for paddlers could soon become bigger and safer.

Mentor City Council recently approved legislation allowing the city to apply for a $50,000 grant through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Nature Works program to help fund an expansion of the kayak launch at Mentor Lagoons Marina.

According to city officials, the approximately $70,000 project would extend the existing dock by about 160 feet.

The current launch has become increasingly popular with kayakers exploring the Mentor Lagoons and nearby Lake Erie waters. City leaders say the additional dock space would help accommodate growing demand while improving safety for users.

The project still depends on receiving grant funding, but officials believe the improvement would enhance one of Mentor's most popular outdoor destinations.

With summer underway and interest in kayaking continuing to grow, the expansion could provide more room for residents and visitors looking to enjoy one of Mentor's unique natural attractions.

🏘️ Why Some Homes Age Better Financially

Why Do Some Homes Appreciate More Than Others?

Two houses can start out looking almost identical and end up in very different places years later.

That might seem surprising. After all, square footage, number of bedrooms, and age are easy to compare. But long-term value is shaped by things that aren't always obvious.

Some neighborhoods develop mature trees and a sense of character that can't be built overnight. Some homes sit on quiet streets that remain desirable for decades. Others benefit from convenient locations, flexible layouts, and features that continue appealing to future buyers.

That's one reason expensive renovations don't always guarantee higher values. What's popular today isn't always what people will want twenty years from now.

In many ways, a home's future value depends on people who haven't even lived there yet.

The families who eventually buy a house bring different tastes, different priorities, and different lifestyles. Homes that adapt well to those changes often age better financially.

That's why real estate has always been about more than the house itself.

It's also about the neighborhood, the street, and how people want to live—both now and decades from now.

👉🏻 Continue reading: The website version explores why mature trees, quiet streets, and even future generations of buyers can influence which homes become more valuable over time.

⚾ Guardians Fall to Astros Despite Another Solid Start From Slade Cecconi

Alvarez Homers Again as Guardians Fall 2-1 to Astros

The Cleveland Guardians dropped a tight 2-1 game to the Houston Astros on Sunday, closing out their series with a loss despite keeping Houston's offense largely in check.

Yordan Alvarez gave the Astros an early lead with his American League-leading 25th home run, a solo shot in the first inning. Houston added another run in the fourth before Cleveland answered in the fifth. Petey Halpin tripled and later scored when Travis Bazzana grounded out, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Guardians starter Slade Cecconi pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Although he took the loss, the right-hander continued a steady stretch in which he has surrendered three runs or fewer in nine consecutive starts.

Houston starter Kai-Wei Teng limited Cleveland to one run over six innings, and Astros relievers Steven Okert, Bryan King and Josh Hader combined for three scoreless innings to finish the game.

Cleveland has lost four of its last six games.

The Guardians open a three-game series Monday against the White Sox in Chicago, with Gavin Williams (9-4, 3.83 ERA) scheduled to start.

⚾ Captains Fall to Loons Despite Strong Start From Hernández

A strong outing from Melkis Hernández wasn't enough Sunday as the Lake County Captains dropped a 5-4 decision to Great Lakes in Midland League play.

Hernández allowed just one run on three hits over five innings while striking out four. The game was tied when he exited, but the Loons scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning against reliever Jogly García, including a two-run homer by Logan Wagner.

Welbyn Francisca put Lake County ahead in the fourth with an RBI triple, and Tommy Hawke added a sacrifice fly in the fifth for a 2-1 lead. Great Lakes answered with Emil Morales' solo homer in the sixth before taking control in the seventh.

The Captains rallied in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Jeffrey Mercedes and an RBI single from Dean Curley, but came up one run short.

Lake County, now 1-1 in the second half, is off Monday before returning home Tuesday, June 23, to begin a six-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
